The Three Rivers Figure Skating Club hosts their annual Figure Skating Competition Sunday, Feb. 24, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Events take place at the Brooklyn Park Community Activities Center, 5600 85th Ave. N. in Brooklyn Park, and admission is free.
This is Three Rivers Club’s 8th annual competition, with a record number of skaters (167) and events (311). Area skaters participating are Victoria Halvorson, an eighth grader at Osseo Junior High; Alyssa Sylveste, a Rush Creek Elementary sixth grader; Jessica Jarosik, an eighth grader at Osseo Junior High; and Lauren Jarosik, a Rice Lake Elementary fifth grader.
In addition to the traditional freeskate events, skaters will compete in compulsory, jumps, and spins events (two skaters on the ice at a time demonstrating specific skating elements for their level), as well as Artistic programs. Artistic programs include creative interpretation of music, using choreography and costumes…and they can get really creative. Skating competitions group skaters at different skill levels together in small groups, to make the events fair and fun for all of the participants.
This year, over 20 different skating clubs are represented in this event, from Brooklyn Park to Chippewa Falls, Duluth, Eagan, and East Grand Forks, N.D. Participating skaters range from 5-years-old to adult, and from basic skills levels up to juvenile test levels and adult skaters. This event is one of the main fundraisers for the Three Rivers club.
