Rockford gymnastics coach Jessica Johnson said the season was filled with “smiles, accomplishments and happy tears.”

There was no greater example than after the Section 5A meet last Thursday in Delano. The Rockets placed third for the school’s best placement in years.

Rockford scored a season high 125.125 and four gymnast placed. Two Rockets will be venturing to the state meet, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23.

Junior Mikayla Erickson placed second on beam with a score of 9.0 to advance. Senior Brianna Schumacher placed fourth on uneven bars with 8.3, also earning a trip to state.

Also placing at sections was eighth-grader Rachel Selly, sixth on balance beam at 7.9. Junior Amber Sahli placed eighth on vault with 8.55.

“As a coach, words can hardly express how proud I am of this whole group of girls,” said Johnson. “Plus, we had one of the biggest crowds at the section meet. The JV girls made signs and gifts and they cheered the loudest.”

Johnson gave credit to first-year head co-coach Mike Erickson, who “helped up our skills. It has been a long road up hill, but we are starting to see the horizon. We are a competitive team that others are now looking out for.”

The coach adds how Mikayla Erickson and Brianna Schumacher are two of the hardest workers in the gym. She adds, “The two of them are incredibly focused, while at the same time they both are willing to help anyone out that needs it. I cannot wait to take them to State.”
