LETTER: Cheap entertainment in your neighborhood

Letter to the Editor:

Every time I go out to shop or eat in the Maple Grove area, I am amazed at how packed the restaurants and stores are. It is difficult to find a parking spot, and it’s typical to wait in line. I would like to remind everyone that is spending their entertainment dollars here that our schools need your support too.

Once again, the Osseo School District is faced with a failed referendum and decisions about budget cuts. And once again, the arts and sports programs are struggling to survive the cuts. Whether you’re on the side of supporting the School Board’s budgetary decisions or not, I think we can all agree that the kids in this school district that have dedicated their time and talents to an extracurricular activity deserve our support. There is an easy, inexpensive way you can provide that support. Attend their events. Go to a wrestling match or a basketball game. Not only does it cost just a few bucks to get in the door, the booster clubs are usually providing inexpensive meal options too.

Besides sports, there are often concerts and plays open to the public. Granted some of these events are already packed with parents and grandparents, but some events have plenty of room for more audience members. One coming up is the Maple Grove Junior High School play. Productions are at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28 to March 2, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. Tickets are only $8 at the door. It is very cheap entertainment from a group of talented kids who audition to gain a part and have worked very hard for over two months to prepare a production for the public. Instead of going to a movie, come see live entertainment and help preserve an activity that gives your neighbor’s kids a productive way to showcase their talents.
