To almost no one’s surprise, the St. Michael-Albertville wrestling team captured the Section 7AAA wrestling team title Friday, Feb. 15, and in doing so, qualified for the State Wrestling team tournament, to be Thursday, Feb. 28, at the X-cel Energy Center in St. Paul. STMA defeated the number 2 seed, Cambridge-Isanti, by a score of 47-16 in the finals to win the section title and advance to State for the 23rd time in school history and the 20th time in the past 21 years.

For the “number one” state-rated Knights, it was the third time this season that they have wrestled the “number four” rated Bluejackets and had their largest margin of victory (31 points) on Friday night, in the 3 meetings. STMA defeated Elk River 69-0 and Coon Rapids 65-3, earlier in the tournament, to reach the finals.

The entire State dual meet tournament is Thursday, Feb. 28, the 3rd year for the 1-day dual tournament format. The Knights will wrestle their 1st round match at 9 a.m. on Friday and assuming they keep winning, they will wrestle the semi-final round at 1 p.m. with the finals at 7 p.m., all at the X-cel Energy Center.

Since moving to “Class AAA”, the Knights have finished runnerup to Apple Valley in each of the past 3 seasons, and should the “number-one” Knights and “number-two” Apple Valley Eagles both make the finals, the much anticipated one vs. two match-up would be Thursday, the 28th at 7 p.m.

STMA junior Aaron Dick said, “We’ve been working hard all year with no letdowns, even after winning the Clash and the Christmas Tourney and we really want to take care of unfinished business this year at State.”

Jake Briggs, another sophomore on the team, says, “Like the coaches have been telling us all season, stick to the plan, just keep working hard and trust in our training.” Senior Ricky Briggs added, “I think we are coming together here at the end of the season, and even though we are rated number one, we still have to prove it by getting it done on the mat.” And senior Mikey Kessler, commented, “We know we can get the job done at State, but we have to perform on the day. I know one thing, it should be a great wrestling match between us and Apple Valley, assuming we both get there. It should be fun.”

The Knights will be competing on Friday and Saturday, February 22nd and 23rd, in the Section 7AAA Individual Tourney at Anoka High School. Top 2 individuals in each weight class qualify for the State Individual Tourney to be held Friday and Saturday March 1 and 2, at the X-cel Energy Center.
