The Rogers Royals salvaged second place in the conference by defeating St. Michael-Albertville 5-3 in their regular-season finale at home Thursday evening.
Nate Weber delivered two goals and Travis Brown, Branden Cecil and Alexander Lorman one each for Rogers. The Royals finished 5-3 in the Mississippi 8. Buffalo was 6-2 with two wins over Rogers, ending the Royals three-year reign in the conference.
The Royals busted a 2-2 tie with three goals in a span of two minutes, 42 seconds overlapping the second third periods, by Weber (power play), Lorman and Weber again. David Anderson, Connor Spetz and Tayler Hayes scored for the Knights, all on power plays.
STMA was 3-for-8 on power plays and Rogers 2-for-5. Brown’s goal was a power play.
Rogers goalie Blake Ternus stopped 35 of 38 and STMA’s Matt Borgen was 25-for-30. Lorman made two assists for Rogers.
The Royals, after a 2-6-1 start, are almost back at .500 with an 11-12-2 record heading into sectionals. They are seeded fourth in Section 5A and will host No. 5 Legacy Christian Academy next Thursday at 7 p.m.
