Osseo grapplers top Armstrong in regular season final
The Osseo High School wrestling team improved its conference record to 5-5 with a 45-25 win over Robbinsdale Armstrong Thursday, Feb. 7. The Orioles complete their regular season with an overall record of 7-7.
Osseo jumped out to a 12-0 lead as the Falcons forfeited to eighth grader Nicholas Carline at 106, followed by seventh grader Dominic Smith making his varsity debut with an uncontested victory at 113.
Armstrong answered with 6 points at 120 and a wash at 126 before Carson Brolsma earned his team leading 26th victory of the season with a technical fall at 132. Ryan Swenson followed with a second period pin at 138 and a major decision from tri-captain Tony Gamache at 145 staking the home team to a 21-point lead.
Senior Trevor Schauls received a forfeit to increase Osseo’s advantage to 33-6 through 152, before the Falcons answered with consecutive wins at the next three weights to close the gap to 33-19. Sophomore Hamzeh Salti ended the Robbinsdale school’s run with a decisive win by default at 195.
Armstrong scored their final points at 220 before tri-captain AJ Dehn ended Parents/Senior night and the regular season on a high note with a first period pin at heavyweight. Dehn’s fall was his 17th of the season, one behind Gamache, who leads the Orioles with 18. Swenson’s win was his 20th of the campaign joining Brolsma (26) and Gamache (23) in the 20 wins club.
“The team has improved greatly since the first practice and our goal is to peak for the tournaments,” said Osseo coach Alan Wiley. “We’re looking forward to the most exciting part of our season.”

Osseo next enters the Section 5AAA Team Tournament Saturday, Feb. 16, at Centennial. The preliminary “pigtail” round begins at 10 a.m. Saturday. Osseo, seeded third, will open against No. 6 Irondale in the quarter-finals at 11:30 a.m. The semi-finals are scheduled for 1 p.m. and the championship final at 2:30 p.m. Centennial is the No. 1 seed and Mounds View No. 2.
