MGJH announces 2013 Geographic Bee champion

The Maple Grove Junior High school level National Geographic Bee was held Thursday January 17th after school. The finalists competing were; Jenna Carlson, Blake Iverson, Tia Johnson, Suchet Ketkar, Mike Marsden, Paul Malenke, Mat Mueller, Ben Peterson, Cameron Stepka and Zach Theisen. This competition consists of two rounds, a final round with all the finalists and a champion ship round of the remaining top two competitors.

After several tough rounds Paul and Tia tied for third place, leaving Blake and Mat for the championship round.

The top two competitors answered the same three questions to determine the winner. The winning question was, The Yaghan were a nomadic tribe indigenous to Tierra Del Fuego, an island group that is divided between Argentina and what other country? After the thee questions were answered, second place student went to Mat, and the MGJH 2013 school champion with 2 out of 3 correct answers is Blake.

Blake will now take a qualifying test to try to get into the state bee. The state bee includes the top 100 students in the state and will be held at St. Cloud State University in early April. The state champion gets an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. in May and has a shot at the $25,000 first prize.

The answer to the winning question is Chile.
