Crimson boys give No. 1 Pirates a good fight in basketball thriller

Playing on the home court of the state’s top-ranked team, the Maple Grove Crimson were not intimidated and gave a spirited fight before falling 73-69 Jan. 25.

The Crimson trailed 34-32 at halftime and continued to hang close throughout the second half but could not quite catch up and lost by four.

Maple Grove received a good team effort as Jake Wieneke, Brycen Wojta and Erik Olson all scored 14 points and Grant Kaufman added 12. Olson added nine rebounds and Wojta, who entered this week second in the state in assists behind Osseo’s Bridge Tusler, had 12 helpers against the Pirates. Quinton Hooker led PC with 23 points.

The loss ended Maple Grove’s five-game win streak and was the Crimson’s second loss in the last 12 games.

Maple Grove next hosts neighboring rival Wayzata Friday, Feb. 1.
