Jan. 17, 18, and 19, were a busy 3 days for the STMA Knights wrestling team with competition 3 days in a row, all on the road. They defeated Hutchinson 62-6 and Mound-Westonka 58-9 on Thursday Jan. 17th in a triangular, at Hutchinson. They, then, traveled to Cambridge on Friday Jan. 17, where they defeated Cambridge-Isanti by a score of 40-10. Then on Saturday Jan. 19th, they competed in and won convincingly, a 9-team individual tourney at Eden Prairie.
The Knights won 25 out of the 28 individual matches in dominating the 2 non-conference opponents at Hutchinson on Thursday. Mitchell McKee and Tanner Mills each had a pair of pins to lead the Knights.
STMA won 11 of 14 matches in defeating conference-rival, Cambridge-Isanti, on Friday.
Tanner Mills had the only pin for the Knights as the team improved their overall dual meet record to 18-1 and their Mississippi-8 conference dual meet record to 3-0.
Coach Dan Lefebvre commented about the Cambridge-Isanti match, “They are a very tough team and well-coached. They battled us each match and our guys had to work hard to score points.
Nothing came easy in this dual. I am very proud of the boys for the way they competed.”
At the Eden Prairie Invitational Tourney, the Knights crowned 8 individual champions in dominating the field to win the team title. STMA scored 238.5 points, finishing ahead of runnerup Owatonna-161, followed by: Annandale/Maple Lake-135.5, Sibley East-117.5, Eden Prairie-117, Anoka-114, Sommerset(WI)-64, New Richmond-48, and Spectrum-18. Individual Knight wrestlers winning titles were: Mitchell McKee(113 pounds), Tommy Thorn(120), Mark Voss(132), Cole Sladek(138), Lincoln Mallinger(145), Jake Briggs(182), Mikey Kessler(220), and Mitch Eull(285).
Tommy Thorn had 3 pins enroute to his title at 120 pounds. All 14 Knight varsity wrestlers placed in the “top 4” of their respective weight class.
Coach Lefebvre had this to say after capturing the title at the Eden Prairie Invitational, “Our wrestlers never stop amazing me. This was our 3rd consecutive day of tough competition and the guys continued to perform at a high level. They have maintained their intensity all year long.”
In other STMA wrestling news, the STMA 9th grade team placed second in the State Ninth Grade League Dual Meet Tournament, Saturday Jan. 19 at Hastings. The STMA 9th graders defeated Rocori 48-21, Frazee 48-16, Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 52-21, and Albert Lea 34-16, before losing to Anoka, in the championship match by a score of 40-26.
STMA next competes in a triangular at home on Thursday Jan. 24th , starting at 5:00 PM with Blaine and Rogers. They travel to Forest Lake on Saturday Jan. 26th for a dual meet tournament, then go to Buffalo for a dual meet on Thursday Jan. 31st.
