Since opening the season 0-3, the Maple Grove boys’ basketball team has won nine of its last 10 games.
In last week’s action, Brycen Wojta scored 24 points and Erik Olson had 17 points and 9 rebounds to lead MG to a 68-48 win over Anoka Jan. 15. Three days later Jake Wieneke scored a season-high 17 points, Olson 15 and Grant Kaufman 10 to lead MG over Blaine 60-41 Jan. 18.
“Right now we are playing good team basketball,” MG coach Nick Schroeder said. “Our seniors are stepping up into leadership roles and our young guys are settling in and starting to look more comfortable.”
Returning seniors Wojta, Olson, Wieneke and Kaufman have led the way and MG is getting good contributions from seniors Brandon Barta and Austin Paul, juniors Matt Lingdgen, Jake Sterling and Brian Fotso, and sophomore Elliot Kane. After the slow start, the Crimson have lost only once, at home to Osseo. Schroeder feels the Crimson can play at an even higher level.
“The great thing about this team is we have not reached our full potential yet and when that day comes I think we are going to be tough to beat,” he said.
The Crimson face a tough task this Friday, Jan. 25, when they visit No. 1 Park Center.
