Brolsma earns 100th win during Osseo’s busy wrestling week

Osseo sophomore ace Carson Brolsma became the 19th Osseo wrestler to earn 100 wins in last week’s action.

Osseo defeated section rivals Champlin Park and Irondale Thursday, Jan. 17, in a double header to even up their season dual meet record at 6-6. The Orioles topped the Rebels 33-27 and closed out with a 46-21 win over Irondale.

On Saturday, Jan. 19, Osseo placed third at the Elk River Invitational with 156.5 points behind champion Elk River (201) and Brainerd/Pillager (178).

“We wrestled well this week and it’s especially good to get a couple of wins over section opponents,” commented head coach Alan Wiley. “The team is making steady progress which is encouraging.”

In the Champlin Park dual Mitchell Lewison (113), Tony Gamache (152) and AJ Dehn (Hwt) scored falls, with Ferhan Abdisa winning by a technical fall at 126. Brolsma earned a major at 138, with regular decisions from Maverick Marasch (132) and Ryan Swenson at 145 pounds. Marasch’s win was in “sudden victory overtime” for yet another wire beater by the never-say-die freshman. Dehn wasted little time locking up Osseo’s winning points with a 41 second pin in the final match of the dual.

Against Irondale Adam Lanners (120), Swenson and Gamache scored pins. Lewison (106), Marasch and Andrew Lanners (160) earned decisions with Nicholas Carline (113), Badhasa Wako (170) and Stavros Peterson (195) recording uncontested victories for Osseo.

The showcase match of the night took place at 132 where two state-rated wrestlers went head-to-head as Brolsma took the mat against Irondale senior standout Dustin Weinman. Both wrestlers are currently rated among the top (3-A) 126 pounders in the state with Weinman ranked second and Brolsma eighth. Brolsma came out quickly, scoring on a clean leg takedown to gain the early lead and remained on the attack throughout the match, although the cagey Irondale veteran managed to rally with a strong counter effort to hold on for a 4-2 win.

Four Orioles advanced to the championship finals in their respective divisions, with all four earning 2nd place-silver-medalist honors. Brolsma recorded his 100th varsity career win with a first round major decision, followed by a decision for win 101 before falling short in the title match to a state-rated Elk River senior at 132. He became the 19th Osseo wrestler to reach the century win mark.

Gamache extended his team lead in falls to 17, with back to back pins at 145, before dropping a close title round decision to a Dassel-Cokato senior. Lanners received a bye to the semis at 152 where he scored a major decision and later dropped a decision to a Brainerd senior in the finals. Lillis pinned his way to the 220 pound final where he fell to a Royalton/Upsala senior.

Third place (bronze medal) finishers included Abdisa with consecutive wrestle back wins at 120, including a major decision and a 14 second fall, with his only loss to the eventual champion.

Also finishing third was Julio Ceballos with a strong effort, including consecutive wins after an opening round loss to the top finisher at 182 pounds. Other place-winners were: Lewison (fifth at 106), Adam Lanners (sixth at 113), Marasch (fifth at 126), Swenson (fourth at 138), Wako (fourth at 160) & Dehn (fourth at hwt). Carline (fourth at 106) and Travis Mollen (fourth at 220) were varsity wild card place-winners.
