Osseo puckmen get rare chance to play outdoor

The Osseo boys’ hockey team will experience a taste of old school hockey when they play an outdoor game at Coon Rapids Saturday, Jan. 19. Game time is 3 p.m. The game will be played on the outdoor sheet next to the Coon Rapids Ice Center, 11000 Crooked Lake Boulevard.
“We are definitely looking forward to it. It will be a lot of fun — old school hockey,” Osseo coach Kevin Willey said. “Coon Rapids build a new rink a year or two ago and right next to it they built an outdoor refrigerated sheet with seamless glass, bleachers and scoreboard. We both just talked about it last year and got it lined up.”
The Orioles will be seeking victory against a Coon Rapids team that is also struggling in the rugged Northwest Suburban Conference. The Orioles are 1-7 after losing to Elk River 3-0 last Saturday. The Cardinals are 0-6-1.
“We are struggling to put goals on the board right now,” Willey said. “We have tried numerous line combinations and have even had a few D move up to forward to try and spark some more offense. Our goaltending has been solid all year though with senior Alex Otto and junior Connor Dahlberg. We knew we would take a few lumps along the way this year with so few returners and so many young guys, but we need to continue working hard on sustaining a full effort for an entire 51 minutes. We can’t take any time off during a game as our conference is one of the toughest in the state.”
