Recently, the STMA wrestling team moved into the number one ranked spot for Minnesota class “AAA” wrestling teams.

With 4 dual meet wins and then taking home the title at the Kiffmeyer Dual Meet Tournament in St. Cloud, this past week, the Knights did nothing to hurt their new number one status. On Thursday, Jan. 10, the Knights hosted conference foe, Monticello, and defeated the Magic by a score of 61-9. They then won 3 dual meets Saturday, Jan. 12, at St. Cloud to capture the Kiffmeyer Duals team title. In winning the tourney title, STMA defeated Sauk Rapids/Rice in the first round 54-3, then defeated number 8-ranked Hastings 51-18, in the semi-finals, before downing number 4-ranked Albert Lea, by a score of 40-9, in the finals. With the wins, the Knights improved their dual meet record to 15 wins against 1 loss. 5 STMA varsity wrestlers had 3 wins and no losses in the tourney, they were: Mitch McKee (113 pounds), Cole Sladek (138), Jake Briggs (182), Ricky Briggs (195), and Mikey Kessler (285). Freshman Mitch McKee (113) notched his 100th career victory, reaching the milestone win with a pin over Kyle Erickson of Hastings in the Knights’ second dual of the day.

Knight’s coach Dan Lefebvre commented, “After winning the Christmas Tourney, then winning ‘The Clash’, the guys have come back with intensity and focus, both in practice and in meets. I was concerned with a possible letdown, but they aren’t taking things for granted and they’ve been sticking to the plan, to keep working hard and improve as a wrestler. It’s evident that our guys know that they don’t have it made with the way they are working, it’s a must to keep getting better.”

STMA’s junior varsity team also won the team title at St. Cloud, by defeating Apollo 71-6, then defeating Hastings 60-18, before downing Cambridge-Isanti 48-29, in the finals. Undefeated wrestlers for the Knights junior varsity included: Zach Dehmer (106), Zach Schoen (113), Jeff Geiger (120), Colten Schoen (126), Donnie Leuer (132), Austin Schei (138), and Mitchell Zachman (152).

The team faces a busy upcoming schedule as they travel to Hutchinson Thursday Jan. 17, for a triangular versus Mound-Westonka and Hutchinson, then go to Cambridge-Isanti Friday, Jan. 18, for a dual, then head to Eden Prairie for an 8-team individual tourney Saturday, Jan. 19. The next home match for the Knight wrestlers is Thursday January 24th when they host a triangular with Blaine and Rogers, starting at 5 p.m.
