Osseo girl cagers improve record to 6-1

Osseo picked up two wins last week to improve its record to 6-1. They are now in second place in the Northwest Suburban Conference, trailing 7-0 Centennial.

The Orioles scored an exciting 63-62 win over Park Center Dec. 18. The Orioles came out strong and built up a lead early in the game, but Park Center came back and had a lead just before half time. Phillis Webb made a rebound put back off a missed free throw at the first half buzzer to give Osseo a one-point half time lead.

The second half was tight the entire way. The Orioles enjoyed the lead but could not shake the Pirates, who stayed close until the end.

“Park Center is well coached and they play very hard,” Osseo coach John Rieser said. “We were lucky enough to hang on for the victory. We made just enough free throws to keep our lead at the end.”

The game featured the three top scorers in the conference in PC’s Cayla McMorris, Webb and Janay Morton of the Orioles. McMorris topped the scoring with 23 points, Webb led Osseo with 17 points and Morton added 16. Rieser also recognized the contribution of senior guard Belinda Barfkneckt.

“Belinda played an exceptional all-around game, rebounding and defending,” Rieser said. “She made some key rebounds in the game which allowed us to squeeze out a victory.”

The Orioles had to come from behind to beat Champlin Park. They trailed 22-18 at halftime but rallied in the second half to win 53-46. Ayo Porte scored 15 points to lead Osseo; Morton had 13 and Webb 12.

Osseo next plays Minnetonka Dec. 27 in the Hopkins Holiday Tournament.
