As expected, senior Katie Rooney sparked the offense when the area girls hockey team blasted North Metro 9-2 Thursday to open the season.
Rooney, who led the team in scoring the past couple of seasons, netted five goals and had three assists on opening night. Three of Rooney’s goals came on the power play. The team had five power play goals in the game.
Rooney provided 55 points to lead the charge last season, notching 30 goals in the regular season.
Four other Bison players notched goals against North Metro, showing a balanced offensive attack. Also scoring was Kristen Halluska, Kristin Olson, Emily Varner and Katie Vatnsdal. Lindsay Roethke added four assists and goalie Lindsey Hartfiel made 15 saves.
The Bison led by just one goal after the first period and both teams scored twice in the third period. In between, the Bison blew the game open by scoring six second period goals, out shooting North Metro 28-2.
Rooney played on the first forward line with Lindsay Roethke had Halluska. Coach Ray Dahlof said the second line also played well together with Madi Jewell, Kirsten Olson and Sydney Martichuski.
The defense was paced by Varner, Vatnsdal, Allison Roethke and MacKenzie Rixe.
The Bison tournament is Nov. 23-24, facing Brainerd/Little Falls at 2:30 p.m. Friday and Fort Frances from Ontario at 8 p.m. Saturday.
The team that includes players from Delano, Rockford and Buffalo plays at home at Buffalo Arena, 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, against Anoka.
