One of the recipients was James Keefe, who lives on Lake Sarah in Independence. Keefe accepted his Citizen Commendation Award for helping rescue a man whose ATV went through the ice on Lake Sarah on Feb. 11. Several neighbors who live on the lake helped with the rescue.

Sheriff Stanek said it was at about 6:45 a.m. on a Saturday when a woman who lives on the lake heard screams from the ice and alerted her husband.

Three neighbors grabbed a ladder to use to rescue the man and once he was out of the water brought him to one of their homes and warmed him up with blankets. Emergency responders came to the home and the man was treated for hypothermia at a local hospital.

The Citizen Commendation Award is given for outstanding assistance to the Sheriff’s Office, the community, an organization, a citizen, or in the interest of public safety. The assistance rendered has usually occurred under difficult or demanding circumstances.
