Delano worked for victories in the first two rounds of the Section 2AA team tennis tournament last week and had two more tough encounters in the way of qualifying for the state tournament.
Minnetonka, followed by Delano, earned the top two section seeds in the North Division. Mankato West and Hutchinson led the pack in the South Division.
All four teams held serve to reach the semifinals played Wednesday, Oct. 10 after this issue went to press.
Delano defeated Holy Family 7-0 and Chanhassen 4-3 to advance against Mankato West. Minnetonka went against Hutchinson in the semifinals. The title match was also played Wednesday in St. Peter.
The Tigers swept Holy Family for the second time this season. Winning at singles was Laura Finn, Kristin Hedtke, Laura Parsons and Katie Schleif.
The winning doubles teams involved Cassy Finn with Allison Sandlass, Katie Vatnsdal with Allison Warne and Alex Schreyer with Tayler Hedtke.
“It is tournament time and I knew that Holy Family would play better than they played during the regular season,” said coach Kim Finn. “We stayed strong throughout the match.”
The win put Delano against No. 3 seed Chanhassen, expected to be the team’s toughest match of the season.
“Actually, after the first set I thought this could easily go 6-1 in our favor,” said Finn about the strong start by her players. “Chanhassen brought it on in the second set where most of games were close.
Schleif was the first Tiger to finish and came out on top. She would be the only Delano singles player to win.
Laura Finn’s opponent was ranked No. 4 in the state, winning 6-4 and 6-4. The other two singles matches went three sets.
The victory was sealed when all three doubles teams posted dominating two-set victories.
The individual portion of the section tournament runs Oct. 12, 13 and 15 at Gustavus in St. Peter.
