You have to go back to Sept. 6th when the STMA girls’ soccer team last lost a soccer game. With a 12-1-3 overall record, the Knights received the No. 1 seed in the Section 8AA playoff bracket.

Thursday they host No. 8 seed St. Cloud Tech at 5 p.m. at Community Ed Field. The Knights defeated the Tigers 1-0 earlier this year in a game played at St. Cloud State’s Husky Stadium.

The winner of the Tech, STMA game advances to Saturday’s semifinal round versus the winner of No. 4 seed Brainerd and No. 5 seed Buffalo. Anoka is seeded second, followed by Elk River, Brainerd, Buffalo, Moorhead, Rogers and St. Cloud Tech.

The Knights are a combined 5-1-2 this season against section opponents. The only loss came in a 1-0 affair at Buffalo. They tied both Elk River and Anoka by identical 1-1 scores earlier this year.

“We were hoping for the No. 1 seed,” said STMA head coach Megan Johnson. “We have been working really hard all season for it. All the teams in the section have played some really close one-goal games. Anything can happen.”

The section championship will be played next Tuesday at the home of the highest seed.

The Knights have been knocked out of the section final game each of the past two years, once by Anoka and the other to Elk River.

“Our goal is state,” Johnson said.
