Knight runners sweep STMA meet, place high at Swain

A busy week for the St. Michael-Albertville High School cross country teams reaped much success as both the boys and girls varsity teams captured team titles at the STMA Invitational, then the boys and the girls placed 4th and 3rd, respectively at the 29-team Swain Invitational in Duluth.

ऀAt the STMA Invitational on Tuesday October 2nd, the Knight girls scored 61 points to edge out runnerup Maple Grove-68, followed by Big Lake-80, Apple Valley-91, Anoka-117, Buffalo-125, and Cooper-146.

ऀSophomore Rachel King once again led the team, placing 2nd individually in a time of 14:55 for the 4K race. Maddi Sjelin placed 4th in a time of 15:21 followed by Lizzy Heil (6th-15:26), Abbie Herbst (21st-16:36), Tori Hamre (30th-16:52), Beth Hinkemeyer (34th-17:08), McKenna Rogers (41st-17:23), Bobbie Brendefur (46th-17:40), and Rylee Hanson (47th-17:42).

ऀIn the boys varsity, the Knights outscored runnerup Buffalo as the Knights tallied 52 points to Buffalo’s 60. Apple Valley was third with 71 points followed by Maple Grove-98, Anoka-140, Cooper-145, and Big Lake-151. Senior Brendan Sage won the individual title and set a course record by touring the course in 16 minutes 1 second, erasing the 2005 record set by former Knight Dan Greeno which was 16 minutes 10 seconds. Chase Cayo was the Knights’ second runner placing 3rd in a time of 16:44 and was followed by Dominic Shovelain (13th-17:33), Jake Monseth (15th-17:36), Christian Eiynck (20th-17:43), Alec Birk (21st-17:49), Derek Johanson (27th-18:01), Jeremy Goude (38th-18:23),Luke Pelant (41st-18:33), Nick Gullickson (48th-19:04), Nick Washatka (58th-19:27), and Jason Colgrove (66th-20:01).

ऀCoach Greeno commented, “We have been running consistently and it was nice to sweep our home meet. I think that’s a first for us, to win both boys and girls varsity races. Now we really have to maintain our focus and come to practice everyday with the attitude of becoming more fit.”

ऀIn the JV girls at the STMA Invite, the Knights were 3rd as a team and were led by sophomore Jaymie Hansen who placed 10th in a time of 18:12 for the 4K. The JV boys were 4th as freshman Lukas Layton was the top Knight placing 15th with a time of 19:42 for the 5K.

ऀOn Saturday Oct. 6, the team traveled to Duluth for the 63rd annual Swain Invitational.

The varsity girls were 3rd out of 29 teams. Rachel King placed 5th ,running a time of 15:28 on the hilly 4K course. Maddie Sjelin also earned a medal by placing 15th in a time of 15:59, followed by Lizzy Heil (18th-16:11), Abbie Herbst (75th-17:27), Tori Hamre (88th-17:37), McKenna Rogers (90th-17:38), and Bobbi Brendefur (199th-18:14). Cassidy Kottke led the girls JV to a 10th place team finish by placing 40th in a time of 18:27.

ऀThe varsity boys were 4th as a team with Brendan Sage crossing the line ahead of everyone in the field and setting a personal best and school-record time by running the hilly 5K course in 15 minutes 53 seconds. Chase Cayo was 8th in a time of 16:30 and was followed by Jake Monseth (50th-17:36), Dominic Shovelain (57th-17:42), Christian Eiynck (68th-17:55), and Derek Johanson (106th-18:26). The boys JV were 6th as a team led by Luke Pelant who placed 10th individually in a time of 17:53.

ऀNext up for the Knight harriers is the Section 5AA Cross Country Meet on Thursday Oct. 25 at Anoka High School.
