A suspect in the death of Colton Gleason, 20, of Greenfield, is in custody.
Jesse Smithers, 17, of Sauk Rapids is being held in Stearns County in relation to an incident that led to the death of Gleason on Friday, Sept. 21.
On Thursday, Sept. 20, at approximately 11:20 p.m. in an alley at the 600 block between 8th and 9th Avenues in St. Cloud, Gleason reportedly tried to keep the friends he was with from getting hit by a car cruising the alley, pushing them back and placing his hands on the car as it went by. The vehicle stopped, one party emerged, and a blow was leveled at Gleason that knocked him to the ground where he sustained a life-threatening head injury. Gleason died the next day.
The attack is considered unprovoked.
The Stearns County Attorney has filed a motion to certify Smithers as an adult in facing charges of Murder in the Second Degree, Manslaughter in the First Degree, and Assault in the First Degree.
Smithers, through is attorney, says that he was not involved in the attack. He is reportedly a senior at St. Cloud Tech.
A Probable Cause hearing for Smithers has been scheduled for Oct. 2.
