STMA runners compete well in Apple Valley

In what was the stiffest competition the Knights have faced all year in cross country, the STMA cross country teams gave respectable performances at the Eagle Invitational cross country meet at Apple Valley High School.

The STMA varsity boys finished 4th among 22 teams behind three “State-rated” teams, Eden Prairie, Owatonna, and Waseca. Brendan Sage was the individual runnerup running the 5K in a time of 16 minutes 13 seconds. Also earning a medal by placing in the “top 30” was Chase Cayo (14th-16:57). Third man for the Knights was Dominic Shovelain (43rd-17:38), followed by Derek Johanson (58th-17:54), Luke Pelant

(82nd-18:14), Christian Eiynck (85th-18:17), and Alec Birk (86th-18:18). The STMA Junior varsity boys were 11th as a team among 24 competing teams. Jeremy Goude was the top finisher running 18:52 for the 5K.

The STMA girls varsity placed 8th as a team in a field of 21 teams. For the first time ever the Knight girls had three runners earn a medal by placing in the “top 30”. Rachel King was 12th individually in a time of 15:14, Maddi Sjelin was 20th in a time of 15:23 and 8th grader Lizzy Heil ran a time of 15:29 to place 24th. Heil’s time of 15:29 lands her in 6th on the STMA “All-time” fastest 4K list for cross country. Other Knights were Abbie Herbst (84th-16:52), McKenna Rogers (95th-17:17), Beth Hinkemeyer (111th-17:43), and Tori Hamre (121st-18:06). The Knights JV girls were 13th as a team led by Rylee Hanson who ran a time of 17:52 for 72nd place.

The Knights will host the Mississippi-8 Conference Cross Country Meet at the Rec. Center Thursday, Oct. 11.
