It was a good sign when Delano cross country runners had control of the Lake Rebecca Park course when dominating the boys’ race at the Delano Invitational last Thursday.

The Tigers will return to the home course when playing host to the Wright County Conference championship meet Oct. 11.

Delano placed four runners in the top five, scoring 30 points, easily defeating Waconia (60), Rockford (63), Maple Lake (69), Southwest Christian (127) and FAIR School (182).

Junior Sam Thomas won his second invite of the year, followed by sophomore Adam Armbruster (2), sophomore Daniel Clark (4), eighth-grader Tucker Sjomeling (5), Trevor Reed (18) and Jacob Hoen (26).

Thomas had set a course record when winning the title at the Maple Lake Invitational earlier in the season.

Rockford also had a good day to place third for the boys. The key was to place four runners in the top 13 and the improvement made by first year runner Ty Griffin, who placed 10th. Griffin is a defending state wrestling champion using the sport to get into better condition.

Nick Klonne led the Rockets in eighth place, followed by Griffin, Drew Haften (11), Austin Withuhn (13), Brannon Winters (21), Nico VanDanacher (22) and Austin Achelik (35).

In the girls race, Delano was third behind Waconia and Maple Lake. Rockford had two varsity runners compete, Lydia Buffie (22) and Emily Pothast (23).

Delano was paced by Sarah Trocke (7), Emily Hartman (9), Kathryn Goldsmith (17), Madeline Sladek (18), Julie Volker (19), Kia Vanasse (20) and Olivia Jacobs (21).
