Delano soccer teams heat up

Delano’s girls and boys soccer teams were as hot as the 90-degree weather when dominating at Glencoe-Silver Lake last week.

The boys earned a 5-0 victory over GSL and lost to Chaska 3-1 to go 3-4 on the season. The girls posted a 2-0 shutout over GSL and lost to Chaska 3-2 in overtime to be 4-2 overall.

Freshman forward Alana Dickerman scored off a cross from senior captain Martha Metz in the first half against GSL. Senior captain Kayla Manske scored off a cross from junior Gabby Cordes. Ninth-grade goalkeeper Kelsey Delisle made eight saves.

“We were able to utilize our whole bench and were focused on keeping players fresh,” said coach Amy Glitsos.

In regulation time against Chaska, junior midfielder Nicole Bressler and senior captain Kallie Statema netted Tiger goals. Delisle came up with 20 saves.

Glitsos said her team played its best game of the season against one of the top teams in the state. She adds how junior midfielder Amanda Gielau stepped filled an open spot in the starting defense and played extremely well, along with defenders, Maureen Booth and Ashley Effertz.

The teams are home against Mound-Westonka, (boys at 5 p.m. and girls at 7 p.m.) before going to face Waconia, Tuesday, Sept. 18 (boys at 5 p.m. and girls at 7 p.m.).
