The Maple Grove boys’ cross country team is again a young team with only four seniors out of the 50 members on the squad. But two talented veterans anchor the team and provide great leadership.
Seniors Ryan Graham and Austin Weigel are captains and they led the team in the off-season to great fitness. Along with Graham and Weigel as captains is junior Sean Heaton.
“All three proved a bright spark to this team, as their work ethic is contagious,” Crimson coach Nathaniel Uselding said.
From a performance perspective, Graham looks to pick up where he left off from last year as a state qualifier and punch his ticket again to the state meet. Close on his heels is Heaton, who works extremely hard to put himself in position to make a run at qualifying too.
These two will lead MG up front, but the Crimson team is continually getting stronger with a huge influx of underclassmen who are learning from some of the state’s best runners.
“We look to prepare these young runners throughout the season by having them ready to perform at a high level when all the chips are on the line,” Useldingsaid.
