Osseo cross country teams look for higher finishes

by Bob San

Both the Osseo boys’ and girls’ cross country team are looking to improve on their conference and section finishes from last season.

Boys Squad

Osseo lost state qualifier Anders Evenson and varsity runners Justin Slattery, David Johnson, and Patrick Griffith. Seniors Zach Benton, Quinn Gamble, and Riley Nortrom will be leading the boy’s squad as the captains.

The Osseo boys' cross country team has many holes to fill as many top runners from 2011 graduated.

Adam Berkowitz is the top returning runner where he was Osseo’s third runner for most of the 2011 season.

Four solid senior boys will make up the top 10 spots. This includes Gamble, Nortrom, and Mark Gooley. The strong junior class of Berkowitz, Tanner Wetzel, Alex Naughton and Jason Schulte look to be in the top 10 and getting some support from sophomores Luc Robichaud, Mitchell Cramer, and Carter Eich.

Last year at the Section 5AA meet the Osseo boys finished fourth out of 15 teams. They are shooting for a top five finish again this year. Centennial is the strong favorite to repeat as section champs followed by Mounds View, St. Michael-Albertville and Maple Grove. Centennial and Andover are expected to compete for the top spot in the Northwest Suburban Conference Meet.

Girls Squad

The Osseo girls’ cross country team returns all of their top runners from last season. They finished a disappointing 10th place out of 14 teams at the Section 5AA meet.

Their senior captains are Jenna Thompson, Kyla Berges and Breana Johnson. They are looking to build off of last season’s experience.

The top five runners look to be Thompson, and sophomores Jenn Hohn, Grace Koskela, Sarah Bezdicek, and Maddie Hvidston. Several girls will be looking to fill the final two varsity spots and that includes junior

Jenny Schoenrock, freshmen Kaylee Fickle, and eighth graders Alliana Houfek and Joanna Lee.

For Section 5AA St. Michael-Albertville is returning as strong squad after winning the section last year and Totino Grace, Coon Rapids, Park Center, and Mounds View look to fight for the top couple of spots.

For the Northwest Suburban Conference meet, Elk River, Coon Rapids, and Andover look to be in the running to win conference.
