Top hitters return to power Rocket volleyball

Lack of experience cannot be used as an excuse by the Rockford volleyball team that lost just one senior from last year and returns seven seniors.

The Rockets were competitive in the first match against St. Anthony Village last week, losing in the five-set tie-breaker. Rockford won 27-25 and 25-13, but lost 25-20, 25-12 and 15-4 in the deciding game.

Captains this season are senior Erin Gerard and Lexi Majeski, plus junior Ellen Paatela. Other top returning players include junior Jordan Weeding, a middle hitter who led the squad in kills.

Majeski is a middle hitter who was tops on the team in blocks. Outside hitters returning are seniors Paatela, Katelynn Pedersen and Jaclyn Bagaason.

“We lost our starting setter for this season and are looking to fill the spot with Bagaason,” said coach Cindi Simonson. “We have one other setting spot that needs to be filled.”

Simonson said hitting should be the strength of the team, but they will need to get the ball to hit in the right spots.

The varsity roster includes seniors Maddie LeDoux, Nicole Buenger and Samantha Trittabaugh, juniors Kaylee Schumacher and Nichole Friedlein and sophomore Emily Eberspacher.

Rockford plays at Eden Valley-Watkins Thursday, Sept. 6 and at Mound-Westonka invitational, starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8. The next home match is 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13 against Kimball.
