After a grueling week of workouts, the St. Michael-Albertville girls’ swimming and diving team opened season play with a convincing 107-77 victory Aug. 24 at Winona.
Senior Katie Schmitz, junior Kasey Roberts and freshman Carly Roberts each won a pair of meets. Schmitz scored six points, finishing first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:05.09. She ran away with the 500-freestyle event with a first-place time of 5:54.11. Her finish was nearly 23 seconds faster than eight-grade teammate Sarah Mulder, who finished in second place.
Kasey Roberts finished first in both the 200 individual medley (2:14.39) and the 100 fly (1:02.13). In 2011, Roberts finished third at state in the 200 individual. Carly finished first in both the 100 freestyle (56.64) and 100 backstroke (1:04.18).
The Robert’s also teamed with junior Josie Burns and sophomore Taylor Pehrson to win the 200 medley relay. The girls scored eight points with a first-place time of 1:56.05.
Burns also finished first in the 50 freestyle (27.40) and the 100 breaststroke (1:17.90).
“The team performed well for such an early meet in the season,” said head coach Tom Guillou. “After two tough days of workouts that involved pool and bluff climbs as part of our two day training trip, I was very pleased with the efforts and results from the entire team.”
The Knights return to the road this Thursday, with a 6 p.m. dual meet at Melrose. Saturday, they are at Big Lake at 10 a.m. The first home meet is Sept. 13 against Cambridge-Isanti.
