Area Kidstoppers recycle shoes

Every summer the Kidstop program chooses a community service project. This year the group of kids chose to work with Nike Reuse-a-Shoe, which is an organization that collects worn-out athletic shoes, ones which would normally be thrown away, and recycles them for new products.

Kids in the Kidstop program celebrate their end of summer drive on Aug. 14 at Rush Creek Elementary. Students collected almost 800 pairs of shoes for the Nike Reuse-a-Shoe organization.

The products in particular they make are: sports surfaces such as basketball courts, tennis courts, and track fields, playground surfaces, and new Nike clothing. Every part of the shoe is recycled into something new.

Area Kidstop locations from Rush Creek Elementary, Basswood Elementary and Elm Creek Elementary participated in the drive from July 9 through Aug. 8. The locations ended up collecting almost 800 shoes and over $400 through the Cosmic Club students, which made and sold trail mix and low-fat cookies.

A celebration took place at the end of the drive on Aug. 14, at Rush Creek Elementary. There were about 10 Minnesota Gopher Athletes at the event to help with the celebration, as well as a representative from Nike, who Skyped in to congratulate and thanks the Kidstop kids.
