Anoka-Hennepin prepares for back-to-school with open houses
As the school year begins, there are steps to take for families to ease the transition into new school year for students.
If a student is entering middle or high schools, families can talk about how the new school will be different, but how there will also be similarities. All middle schools have open houses Tuesday, Aug. 28 and all elementary and high schools have open houses Wednesday, Aug. 29. Families are welcome to walk through the schools and talk with teachers and get information to help students have a successful school year. Check each school’s website for open house times. Also available on schools’ websites are their rules and schedules. Reviewing this information with students will help them know what to expect.
Families are also encouraged to talk with students about what to expect outside of school hours. Discuss what time they’ll get up in the morning, where they’ll catch the school bus, if they’ll take a lunch from home or eat a school, and catching the school bus at the end of the day.
Students should be encouraged to get involved with school sports, clubs and activities. This is a great way for students to explore interests, meet friends and feel connected to their school.
If a student has a concern, his/her family is encouraged to contact the student’s school. There are many people who are dedicated to ensuring every student in the Anoka-Hennepin School District has a positive learning experience.
Also on display during open house at the mainstream high schools will be Anoka-Hennepin’s new telepresence classrooms. An audio/visual conference brought to a new level, telepresence allows a teacher in one location to teach students from across the district’s low-enrollment, high rigor courses. With a grant from Cisco Systems, Anoka-Hennepin is the second school district in the state to take advantage of this technology.
