Wittinger represents Delano at state meet

Alex Wittinger will be the lone Delano entrant at the state high school track and field meet June 8-9 at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Rockford and Delano did have some outstanding efforts in the section finals last week, including earning personal bests. However, only the top two in each event advance.

Wittinger had an advantage of experiencing what it takes to get to state, winning Section 2AA titles in both 100- and 300-meter hurdle events last season as an eighth-grader.

The now ninth-grader has gotten better with age, defending her section titles at Gustavus Friday. Last year at state Wittinger placed ninth in the 100 and could not compete in the 300 finals due to injury.

Also in the hurdles at sections, senior Krista Braegelman placed fifth in the 300 and seventh in the 100. Junior Andria Shrode took fifth in the discus throw and ninth-grader Bria Barfnecht was eighth in the long jump.

The boys had some outstanding performances at sections. Junior Dennis Troussov placed third in the long jump with a leap of 20-feet, 71/4 inches.

"This was one inch away from second place, which would have qualified Dennis for state," said coach Mitch Rue. "He also placed seventh in the 200-meter run and eighth in the 100 meters."

Rue said junior Aaron Klaers also did well, placing fifth in the 100. Personal best times were recorded in the 1600 by Sam Thomas, Adam Armbruster and Leo Janas.

The 4×200 relay of Nathaniel Hood, Justin Elstad, Max Ramstad and Zach Checkal also posted its season best time. Junior Zach Checkal ended his first year in track by placing seventh in the long jump.

Thomas placed ninth in the 3200 and Seth Norling ran a personal best in the 400, just missing the finals.
