Message on flooding

The following is a message from Champlin City Engineer Tim Hanson regarding potential flooding concerns of the Mississippi River:

The city monitors the river levels and monitors the warnings and alerts sent out by the weather service. The current flooding in northern Minnesota is not anticipated to have a significant flooding impact in this region. This is subject to future rainfalls and weather conditions. When the flood waters from up north reach our area the river is significantly wider, deeper and can carry significantly more volume than miles upstream.

The latest forecasts have the river in our area maintaining its current flow rate and elevation for several more days. Although the river is high it is not at a stage of significant concern and it is not forecasted to become a more sever flood situation in our area.

We continue to monitor the situation and weather forecasts.
