The 2012 St. Vincent de Paul varsity softball team claimed the program’s second North Suburban Parochial School League (NSPSL) title in three years Wednesday, May 30, at St. Al’s Field in Brooklyn Center.
The Royals finished second during the regular season and received a first-round bye to advance to the semi-finals, where they shut-out No. 3 St. Raphael’s of Crystal 11-0 Wednesday, May 23, at Boundary Creek Park.
St. Vincent’s then visited top seeded St. Alphonsus of Brooklyn Center where the Royals out slugged the Crusaders in the championship game (19-11) for the school’s third league title ever.
"We had a well balanced team and very strong batters with a lot of power from our eighth graders," noted coach Jeff Spehn. "We had two key home runs in the championship. Sam Cummings hit a two-run home run and Caroline Cotter hit a key grand slam to give us the game winning lead."
St. Vincent’s won their previous NSPSL softball championships in 1974 and 2010. The Royals finished the 2012 campaign with an 8-2 league record.
