Golf season ends for STMA boys

(May 31) The Knights wrapped up their season by shooting 325 in the Section 7AAA tournament played at Grand National Golf Club in Hinckley.

One positive of the meet was three STMA golfers did advance to Day 2, as seniors Brock Green, Tanner Martin and Erik Waldeland each shot 80 to continue on.

That, however, meant each would have to score around 72 on the final day to earn a trip to state. All three shot 79, leaving them out of contention.

"We had a real up and down year as individuals and a team," said STMA coach Tim Anfenson. "We won one meet, finished second in another, and placed third in one.

"We placed fourth in the conference, making a strong finish at the end. I thought we were ready to make a run in the section meet, but it was not meant to be. We had some really nice individual rounds, but lacked the consistency needed at times."

Martin was the only STMA golfer to make the Mississippi 8 all-conference team, while Waldeland and junior Ryan Swenson received honorable mention.

The boys’ team will graduate four seniors, all of which played contributing roles this season. They are Green, Martin, Waldeland and Tom Juntunen.

"Erik was the first player to make a state tourney trip in school history in golf last season," Anfenson said. "[We] should stay competitive next season with many juniors returning."
