Rogers finishes girls’ golf season with gusto

(May 31) The Section 5AAA tournament was played at the Links at Northfork in Ramsey, and the Royals posted a tremendous score.

As a group they beat last year’s total by 30 strokes and moved up five places, scoring a 383 to place seventh out of 13.

Compare that to the 2011 season, when Rogers placed 12th out of 13 with a score of 413.

Paving the way for Rogers, junior Kendra Groenwold brought her A-game, as she fired a personal-best round of 45-46-91. The cut to advance to state was set at 85.

"It’s always fun when a team works hard and see’s results," said Royals coach Durand Onell. "This team has shown great improvement over the season and is already making goals for next year with plans of taking their golf games up to the next level."

In other scores for Rogers, sophomore Maddie Hol shot 94, sophomore Rachel Dodd shot 96 and senior Haley Jung shot 101.

"We are going to miss our two senior captains, Haley Jung and Stephanie Dodd," Onell said. "They have been such good role models, and the other golfers really look up to them."

Winning the tournament was Blaine with a 351, while medalist honors went to Maple Grove’s Jill Larson, who shot 78.
