Crimson girls’ golf team enjoys successful season

The Maple Grove girls’ golf team finished the 2012 season with a 9-1 record, with its only loss against Elk River.

The Crimson entered the conference tournament at Bunker Hills in a three-way tie for first with Elk River and Blaine. Tough conditions and a difficult course got the best of the Crimson, who finished the conference in third place. All Conference honors went to senior Jill Larson (12), sophomore Jillian Klasen and junior and Kristin Stoffels. All Conference Honorable Mention was awarded to eighth grader Sarah Ericson.

The Maple Grove team of Larson, Stoffels, Klasen, Ericson, and sophomores Jayme Balko and Jenn Galloway played in two invitational tournaments, finishing sixth in the Forest Lake Invite. Stoffels took home a third-place medal.

The final event of the season was the Section 5AA tournament played at The Links at Northfork May 24. The team posted its lowest 18-hole score of the season shooting a 369 and finishing fourth out of a 13-team field. Larson took the Medalist honor by shooting a sizzling 6 over par 78. She will advance to the state tournament at Bunker Hills June 12-13.

Overall, MG coach Randy Glasmann feels the team had a good year.

"We had our largest squad this season with 22 players in grades 7-12," she said. "Assistant coach Mark Metcalfe did a wonderful job coaching the three JV teams. Kayla Conklin and Kathryn Fox provided leadership and experience to the relatively young squad. I’m looking forward to next season and hope that we can continue with our winning ways. We’ll have 21 players returning but hope that additional girls will join the team next spring."
