June library events offer summertime activities for everyone

Hennepin County libraries, including the Maple Grove and Osseo libraries, are presenting hundreds of free programs for children, teens, and adults this summer, including book clubs, storytimes, and programs offered in collaboration with community organizations and businesses.

The Maple Grove Library, 8001 Main St. N., will offer the following June programs:

"Celebration of Public Art," Saturday, June 2, at 10:30 a.m. – Join the neighbors at a program to celebrate Maple Grove Library’s public art. "Phenomenon," an outdoor sculpture, and "The Book-Loving Dragon," a suspended piece in the children’s area, were funded by the One Percent for Art initiative.

"Friends Meeting," Wednesdays, June 6 and 27, at 7 p.m. – Join fellow library enthusiasts to hear what’s happening at Hennepin County Library. Help support the library by planning and volunteering at book sales, programs, and special events. The Friends look forward to meeting participants. General membership meeting.

"Teen Anime Club," Tuesdays, June 12 and 26, at 4 p.m. – Entering grades seven 12. Can’t get enough anime? Join up to watch and review brand-new anime episodes, share artwork and hang out with other anime fans. Sponsored by the Friends of the Maple Grove Library.

"Wheels, Wings and Whirly Birds," Tuesday, June 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. – Registration is required and is limited to 20. Entering kindergarten to grade six. Design and construct futuristic planes, automobiles, gliders, whirly birds and whatever other moveable contraptions you can think up! Learn basic drawing, painting, collage and sculpture techniques while creating 2- and 3-dimensional art pieces. Materials provided. Sponsored by MELSA (Metropolitan Library Service Agency) and funded by the Friends of the Hennepin County Library.

"Baby Storytime," Fridays, June 22 to July 6, from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. – Registration is required and is limited to 25. For children from birth to 24 months. Delight and stimulate a baby’s senses with books and music. Build brain power.

"Girls Only Book Club," Tuesday, June 26, at 2 p.m. – Registration is required and is limited to 12. Girls entering grades four to six. Join other girls to talk about a great book. Pick up a copy of the book at the Information Desk. Sponsored by the Friends of the Maple Grove Library.

"Guys Read Book Club," Wednesday, June 27, at 2 p.m. – Registration is required and is limited to 12. Guys entering grades four to six. Join other guys to talk about a great book. Pick up a copy of the book at the Information Desk. Sponsored by the Friends of the Maple Grove Library.

The following are June programs scheduled the Osseo Library, 415 Central Ave.:

"Following the Evidence," Thursday, June 14, at 2 p.m. – Entering grades one to six. Find out how scientists use information to solve crimes and mysteries. Examine fingerprints, fibers, shoe prints, hair and chemicals. Use this knowledge to follow the evidence and solve a mystery. Sponsored by the Friends of the Osseo Library.

"Paint It Green: Mys-Tree Book Making," Monday, June 18, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. – Registration is required and is limited to 20. Entering grades three to five. Never judge a book by its cover or a tree by its bark. Learn about trees inside and out, and create a mysterious tree book with secret hidden pages that will surprise your family and friends. This project is funded with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Presented in collaboration with Silverwood Park.

"Friends Meeting," Monday, June 18, at 6:30 p.m. – Join fellow library enthusiasts to hear what’s happening at Hennepin County Library. Help support the library by planning and volunteering at book sales, programs, and special events. The Friends look forward to meeting participants. General membership meeting.

Hennepin County Library will offer the following program online this summer:

"read.write.draw," Monday, June 11 to Sunday, Aug. 19 – Entering kindergarten to grade six. What are kids reading this summer? Tell other kids by creating a short review at the local library or online at hclib.org/kids/books/reviews. Each review earns participants a chance to win a free book each week. The reviews will help other kids find great books to read.

"Girls Only Book Club Online," Monday, June 25 to Friday, June 29 – Registration is required and is limited to 20. Girls entering grades four to six. Join other girls to talk about a great book. Participate in the book discussion through kidlinks.org, Monday-Friday, any time of day. Participantsmust have a current email address (may use family email) and Internet access (you can use a computer at the library, at home or a mobile device) to participate.

"Guys Read Book Club Online," Monday, June 25 to Friday, June 29 – Registration is required and is limited to 20. Guys entering grades four to six. Join other guys to talk about a great book. Participate in the book discussion through kidlinks.org, Monday-Friday, any time of day. Participants must have a current email address (may use family email) and Internet access (can use a computer at the library, at home or a mobile device) to participate.
