Crimson baseball team recognizes team, individual accomplishments

As repeat champion of the Northwest Suburban conference and Section 5AAA runner-up with a 20-5 record, this year’s Maple Grove baseball team set new school records in team fielding percentage .944 and first pitch strike percentage at 58 percent.

The following players from Maple Grove were recently recognized for their accomplishments in baseball this past season:

Northwest Suburban All-Conference Team Senior shortstop Logan Hershey holds two Crimson school records for fielding percentage by a second-baseman (.984 in 2011) and fielding percentage from the shortstop position (.917 in 2012). He posted a .342 batting average and tied for first on the team in runs scored with 29 (seventh all-time) from his leadoff position. Hershey won Academic All-State honors and was recognized for the Crimson Leadership Award, given to recognize outstanding leadership both in the classroom and on the field. He was also selected to the Section 5AAA all-tournament team.

Senior first-baseman Roman Collins finished the season with a .415 batting average (16th all-time in Crimson history) and posted a quality at bat percentage of .526 (first all-time). He was tied for first in runs scored with 29 (seventh all-time) and was tops this season in RBI’s with 26 (fifth all-time). He also holds the school record for batting average with runners in scoring position with a .667 average (2010) and .652 average in (2011), and doubles in a single season with (12). Collins also holds the Crimson fielding record by a first-baseman with a .994 average. He was also selected to the All-State team, Section 5AAA all-tournament team, Star Tribune first team All-Metro, All Pioneer Press team, and was a participant in the 2012 Lions All-Star game.

Senior outfielder Brady Jacobs finished the season with a .390 batting average and was second on the club in slugging percentage (.525). He finishes his career 10th all-time in single season (2009) batting average with .432, and sixth all-time (2009) with a slugging percentage of .703.

Junior pitcher Tyler Field led the team in complete games pitched (4), and strikeouts (49), and seven wins (fifth all-time) while posting a 2.02 ERA. He was also selected to the Section 5AAA All-Tournament team.

Junior outfielder Joe Franta finished third on the team with a .365 batting average and was second in hits with 27. He is a solid defender from his centerfield position committing only one error over the past two seasons. He was also selected to the Section 5 AAA All-Tournament team.

Honorable Mention All-Conference

Senior pitcher Mitch Bauer pitched 48 innings finishing with a 4-4-1 record while posting a 2.04 ERA. He was second on the club in strikeouts with 36. He finishes his career fourth all-time in single season wins (8 – 2011) and second all-time in complete game shutouts during a single season (2 – 2011). He is one of four players in Crimson history to hit a grand slam.

Senior catcher Tanner Ruprecht finished the season with a .349 batting average and was third on the club in slugging percentage at .524. As a two-year starter behind the plate he places third in school history for runners thrown out during a single season with (10) in 2012.
