Wittinger sets school hurdle record

Ninth-grader Alex Wittinger finished sixth in the 300-meter hurdles at the State Class AA track and field meet Saturday at Hamline University.

In the process, Wittinger set a new all-time school record in the 300 hurdles. She already had the record in the 100-meter hurdles where she also competed at state but did not make the finals.

"All her hard work and determination this season paid off," said coach Jake Pederson. "She runs with such intensity and focus. I am lucky to have her for another three years."

Last year Wittinger also won section titles in the two hurdle events. At state she made the finals in the 300, but was too injured to compete in the finals.

Wittinger was named the team’s most valuable runner. The most valuable in field events went to junior Andi Joe Shrode, who was fourth best in the conference in the discus and seventh in the shot. She also did the hurdles, sprints and long jump

Senior Krista Braegelman ended her Delano career with the third best time in the 100 hurdles and is fifth all-time in the 300 hurdles.

Senior Ellie Ross is seventh all time in the 800 and was given the award for most spirit and sportsmanship.

Ilsa Stone was named rookie of the year.

Captains for next year are Shrode, Ashley Simenson, Tia Olstad and Allison Warne.
