STMA golfer, Kylie Slavin, advances to state

For the first time in school history, the Knights will have a representative in the girls’ Class 3A state golf meet at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids on Tuesday, June 12, and Wednesday, June 13.

To qualify, junior Kylie Slavin scored 83-85-168 in the two-day Section 7AAA meet played at Grand National Golf Club in Hinckley.

"Kylie had really started playing well the last two weeks," said STMA coach Mitch Harmoning. "She peaked at the right time."

Slavin’s 83-her lowest score of the year and a school record-came on Memorial Day (May 28), day one of sections.

"In the first round, Kylie started off real well playing even par through the first four holes," Harmoning said. "She took a couple of bogeys to finish the first nine, but rebounded well by paring the 10th and 11th [holes] to settle down. She also pared three of her last four to finish strong."

On the final day (May 31), Slavin started her round with a triple bogey on the first hole.

"She recovered again and pared the next two holes and was able to relax a little bit," Harmoning said. "A bogey and double [bogey] on the next two holes were tough."

She battled a cold putter all round. But a birdie on the par-3 sixth hole really gave her confidence.

Then on a grinding back nine, she recorded seven straight bogeys.

"She had great bogeys and pars that got away, but her mental composure was awesome," Harmoning added. "She was focused and grinded throughout the round, all day."

She parred her final two holes to finish at 85.

"Kylie’s mental focus and the fact that she kept her mistakes manageable were her biggest attributes these two days," Harmoning said. "She didn’t take the huge number.

"Kylie works hard and deserves everything she gets. She doesn’t take shortcuts."
