No. 1 Minnetonka ended Maple Grove’s season in a boys’ lacrosse section semifinal last week.
Maple Grove was seeded fifth in the section and started its playoff bracket with a 10-4 against the #12 seed Elk River at home. Elk River kept it close for the first two quarters with great goaltending until the Crimson started to pull away in the second half.
David Corazalla, Spencer Bell and Danny Hess each contributed two goals and even the defensemen got in on the scoring with Matt Leonard getting a goal on a great run up while clearing the ball.
Maple Grove then edged No. 4 Armstrong on the road in the quarterfinal. The Crimson had lost to the Falcons earlier in the season and fell behind 2-0 in the first half. They rallied to take the lead in the second half behind goals from Corazalla, Bell, and Shane Wolden. Goalie Austin Gardner and the defense held Armstrong to one goal in the last two quarters, which allowed Nathan Otterson to net the game winner and advance the Crimson to the semifinal.
In the section semi finals, the Crimson traveled to the No.1 seed and No. 1 ranked team in the state in Minnetonka.
Missing top scorer Corazalla, the Crimson struggled to find the offensive punch while Minnetonka played very well both from attack and midfield. Maple Grove played hard all 48 minutes, but could not overcome the Skippers and lost 14-2 to end their season.
