STMA girls place 4th in conference golf

The Knights needed to beat Cambridge-Isanti in their final two Mississippi 8 Conference meets of the season to finish fourth ahead of the Bluejackets-and they did.

One of the victories came on the Bluejackets home course, Purple Hawk.

"It was a team challenge I placed on the girls, and they responded very well," said Knights coach Mitch Harmoning.

For the Knights, junior Kylie Slavin finished sixth overall in conference play and was named to the all-conference team, while senior Sam Wortman received all-conference honorable mention.

This season, several team records were set, led by a combination of players that included Slavin, Wortman, Maddie Malone, Kate Drimel, Megan Cichos, Karli Buckmeier and Lucy Arndt. Each contributed in five of the team’s top-10 scores in school history.

A round of 365 recorded by the team of Wortman-Slavin-Malone-Drimel on their home course, Riverwood National Golf Course, is tops.

Additionally, Slavin tied the school’s 18-hole low score with an 84 at Albion Ridges, and set a nine-hole record with a 39 on the back nine at Pebble Creek.

Moreover, Wortman climbed to the top of the career pars list with 122 in three and a half seasons of varsity golf.

"Others are following in her footsteps," Harmoning said. "She has played in that No. 1 spot for a long time, and taken pressure off the others on her team. She will be difficult to replace."
