American Legion and VFW Posts are planning a number of Memorial Day observances for the Monday, May 28, holiday.
The public is invited to attend any of the following events.
Paul Stinson American Legion Post 514, of Maple Plain, will host observances in a number of places.
The biggest event will be the Memorial Day service to be held at 10:30 a.m. May 28, at Lewis Cemetery, located in Independence on County Road 90, south of Highway 12. In event of rain, the service will take place at Christ Lutheran Church, 5084 Main St. in Maple Plain.
Guest speaker will be Independence Mayor Marvin Johnson. Also participating will be Pastor Meg Newswanger and soloist Mark McCulley of First Presbyterian Church of Maple Plain. The Orono High School Band will provide special music.
The Legion Firing Squad also will salute departed comrades at 8:45 a.m. at Oakland Cemetery, located on Watertown Road west of County Road 92 in Independence; at 9:15 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Cemetery and at 9:45 a.m. at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery on County Road 19 south of Loretto.
The Delano American Legion Post is planning a series of Memorial Day observances. The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Legion Club, located on Bridge Avenue at Highway 12. Parade line-up will take place at 10:15 a.m. The procession will travel east on Bridge Avenue, turn north on River Street and end at the Delano Central Park gazebo.
A program at Central Park will follow the parade, with retired Col. Stephen M. Gulyas as featured speaker. After the program, everyone is invited to stop for a sandwich at the Delano American Legion Club.
