Champlin Park High School celebrates 20 years

Do you remember when…?

– Champlin Park High School opens to students for the first day with a laser light show. (1992)

– A delegation from a school in Japan visited CPHS to learn about innovation in American Education. (1993)

– Four key aspects to CPHS opening included: Outcome Based Education, House Concept, Technology and the 3-period day schedule. The 3-period day was switched to a 4-period block schedule in 1993. In 2010, the school switched to a 5-period day. (1992)

– The Marching Rebels earned the first trophy in school history by capturing the Herb Streitz Award at the Waseca Marching Classic. (1992)

– The girls 4×400 relay team captured 3rd in the state tournament. (1993)

– The Nordic 3×5 relay ski team won the first state championship in school history, which was followed by an all-school assembly. (1993)

– The hockey team upset Blaine and Anoka to advance to a state hockey tournament berth. (1995)

– In only the 4th year of existence, the Symphonic Band was invited to perform at the Minnesota Music Educators Convention in Minneapolis. (1996) They were invited back five years later. (2001)

– The staff attended a fall RESPECT retreat. (1997)

– The Rebels football team faces Woodbury in the State Championship game. Although losing, the team earns runner-up status. (1999)

– Governor Jesse Ventura coaching football at Champlin Park High School.

– Breaking the 3,000 student enrollment mark after opening the building with about 1,500 students. Increasing enrollment meant adding three sets of portables over the course of a few years. Enrollment is currently just under 3,000 today.

– The Marching Rebels marched outside and down the aisles of the new Super Target in Champlin at the store’s grand opening. (2003)

– Ibrahim Kabia sets the state record in the 100 meter dash, continuing to hold the state record to this day. (2003)

– CPHS opened as an International Baccalaureate School (2006)

– The State Girls Basketball trip that took 13 buses with over 1,000 students to the game. (2007)

– Throughout her high school career, Abby Duncan won multiple swimming state championships, setting several state records, many of which still stand today. (2007-2011)

– CPHS Rebel Football earns 4th consecutive Northwest Suburan Conference title, the 5th overall in the school’s history. The first was earned in 2004 with an 11-1 record. (2006-2009)

– Sarah Lindstrom and Desiree Shelton wore matching black suits with pink ties as they were presented at the 2011 Snow Days Pep Fest together, changing a long-standing tradition at the school of guy-girl match-ups for the royalty coronation presenations. (2011)
